Bishkek, May 21, 2021. / Kabar / . In Kyrgyzstan, 80 percent of cases of sexual harassment occur in state institutions, according to a study supported by the USAID Collaborative Governance Program.
Thus, the Kyrgyz Association of Women Judges anonymously interviewed 877 women and girls at various workplaces and universities in Bishkek, Kara-Balta, Osh and Tokmak.
Asked if they had experienced sexual harassment, majority of those surveyed acknowledged that the problem exists. 23% of working women and 21.9% of female students reported experiencing sexual harassment.
The study shows that 80% of cases of harassment take place in public institutions.
Most harassment was experienced by unmarried women between the ages of 20 and 38 in the rank-and-file position (70%). Meanwhile, according to the study, women with less power are more susceptible to sexual harassment.
Sexual harassment most often occurs at the hands of middle- and upper-level male executives (44%).
Based on the results of the study, the Kyrgyz Association of Women Judges has developed recommendations for overcoming this problem, including changes in legislation to hold perpetrators accountable, as well as various preventive measures that can be taken in the workplace, hence the relevance of this bill has been proven over time and scientifically substantiated.
