In 2020, the number of deaths from cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) in Kyrgyzstan increased by 29%, it is a direct impact of COVID-19 coronavirus infection, Director of the Mirrakhimov National Center of Cardiology and Therapy Akbai Sarybayev told at a briefing Wednesday.
He added the coronavirus infection complicates the course of CVD and can lead to fatal cases.
"If a patient has cardiovascular disease, coronary heart disease or arteriosclerosis of the cerebral vessels, kidney damage, heart damage, coronavirus infection is much more severe and most often leads to exacerbation of existing diseases and a high risk of death. According to the WHO, among patients who had a severe coronavirus infection, 95% were over the age of 65. Among them, 65% had CVDs," Sarybayev said.
"The first symptoms of coronavirus, in addition to loss of taste and smell, increased body temperature and cough, in patients with CVDs are chest pain in the heart area, pressing pain, shortness of breath, the presence of heart palpitations, weakness, sometimes up to loss of consciousness. In these cases a patient should immediately call an ambulance," the specialist noted.
The cardiologist noted that one of the most effective ways to protect from coronavirus infection is the vaccination. However, Sarybayev stressed the vaccine is not administered during an exacerbation of the disease in a patient.
