Bishkek, July 9, 2021 . / Kabar / . Director of the Scientific Production Association "Preventive Medicine" Omor Kasymov spoke at a briefing about the situation with COVID-19 in the world and new strains of the virus.
"The world community, including the Kyrgyz Republic, was not prepared for the new challenge of SARS-CoV-2 and did not expect such large-scale negative consequences," he said.
Kasymov added that as of today, number of people infected with COVID-19 surpassed 185 million with a daily increase of about 300-400 thousand. Kyrgyzstan’s tally of infections is approaching 140 thousand, and the daily increase is 1,200-1,500 cases.
"The SARS-CoV-2 strain of the original Wuhan variant has undergone significant mutation. According to WHO, several strain classifications have been identified to date: UK (alpha), South Africa (beta), Brazil (gamma) and India (delta), of which the Indian strain is the most dangerous to the human community.
Today, according to the Department of Disease Prevention and State Sanitary Epidemiological Surveillance, there are no cases of infection with the Indian strain in the country, but there are 85.7% of cases of infection with the British and 14.2% with the South African strain," the director explained.
In addition, Kasymov said the most effective prevention to avert from infection and easier transmission of coronavirus would be a vaccination of over 90% of the population.
