Issues of national gender policy discussed in government

Bishkek, Feb. 25, 2019. /Kabar/. Vice Prime Minister of the Kyrgyz Republic Altynai Omurbekova met the leadership of the Ministry of Labor and Social Development of the Kyrgyz Republic and representatives of UN Women in Kyrgyzstan in the Government House on February 21 to discuss key issues of national gender policy.

UN Women office in Kyrgyzstan reported that Deputy Prime Minister Altynay Omurbekova thanked UN Women for their continued cooperation in implementing international and national commitments of the Kyrgyz Republic on gender equality and protecting the rights of women and girls.

During the meeting, the sides discussed the participation of the official delegation of the republic at the 63rd session of the Committee on the Status of Women in New York; the launch of an integrated national review process on the implementation of the Beijing Platform for Action for women's empowerment; the status of the preparation of the Fifth Periodic Report of the Kyrgyz Republic under the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women, the activities of UN Women in preventing the radicalization of women and youth. UN Women also briefly described the results of a study on the relationship between investments in pre-school education and poverty reduction, improving social justice and the status of women.

“Implementation of the Beijing Platform for Action, the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women, the Sustainable Development Goals is a priority of the Government of the Kyrgyz Republic. We are ready to continue open constructive cooperation with all partners to improve the status of women and girls and achieve sustainable development,” Omurbekova noted.

In turn, acting UN Women representative in the Kyrgyz Republic Nurgul Asylbekova noted her readiness to provide all possible assistance in matters of gender policy, including expert support.

“The Kyrgyz Republic is a leader in the region in fulfilling regulatory obligations in the field of gender equality. We work in many villages and see how women have taken responsibility for the most important issues of human development. Support for women's leadership by the Government of the Kyrgyz Republic is vital for ensuring the sustainable development of local communities,” Nurgul Asylbekova said.

As a result, the meeting participants proposed to hold a regular meeting of the National Council for Gender Equality in April 2019.
