Kyrgyz FM Kulubaev speaks at session of UN Human Rights Council in Geneva

Bishkek, March 3, 2023. / Kabar /. On March 2, 2023, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kyrgyz Republic Jeenbek Kulubaev spoke at the High-Level Segment of the 52nd session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva.

During his speech, Kulubaev noted that the Kyrgyz Republic had previously been a member of the Council twice and, based on previous experience, intends to continue to make its feasible contribution to the work of this most important UN body, in particular in such areas as ensuring the rule of law and democracy, assisting promotion of the rights of women and children, migrant workers and persons with disabilities, as well as dialogue to advance the fight against discrimination, xenophobia and intolerance.

Addressing the participants, the Kyrgyz foreign minister informed the participants of the event about the achievements of Kyrgyzstan in the field of human rights, including the inventory of legislation, the humanization of criminal legislation, the implementation of medium-term programs in priority areas such as protecting families and children, gender equality, combating corruption, etc.

Kulubaev stressed that Kyrgyzstan is committed to further formation of a strong democratic form of government, building a state of law, bringing national legislation in line with applicable international law, reforming the judicial and law enforcement system, and improving the electoral process.

The Kyrgyz minister noted that in the light of the severe consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic for the global economy, one of the most key problems has become the external debt of developing countries and expressed the opinion that the external debts of developing countries are growing, depriving them of the opportunity to ensure development through external borrowing thereby impeding the full development of human rights.

In light of this, Kulubaev voiced the call of the President of the Kyrgyz Republic Sadyr Zhaparov to international development partners to intensify work on exchanging the country's external debt for projects in the field of environmental protection.
