Bishkek, Jan. 14, 2019. /Kabar/. “The population of Kyrgyzstan will have been fully provided with drinking water by 2024,” Kyrgyz President Sooronbay Jeenbekov told during a meeting with Director of the State Agency for Architecture, Construction and Housing and Communal Services of the Kyrgyz Republic (SAACHCS) Baktybek Abdiyev, Director of the Department of Drinking Water Supply and Sewage of the SAACHCS Askarbek Toktoshev and Executive Director of the Community Development and Investment Agency of the Kyrgyz Republic (ARIS) Bekjan Supanaliyev.
The meeting participants provided information on the implementation of projects under the Strategy and a program to provide the population with clean drinking water, the press service of the President’s Office of the Kyrgyz Republic reported.
As reported, projects worth 193 million euros are currently being implemented in 21 cities of Kyrgyzstan. The most critical condition for the provision of clean water in Jalal-Abad oblast, where in 148 villages today there is no drinking water. At the same time, throughout Kyrgyzstan, this figure is 390 villages, where there is no clean drinking water.
Projects to ensure clean drinking water are supported by such partners and donors of Kyrgyzstan as the World Bank, Islamic Development Bank, Asian Development Bank, European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), European Union, Swiss Confederation, etc., from which the country received a total of $ 191 million, the bulk of the aid is grants.
In addition, various funds of Arab countries – Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, etc., express a desire to assist in attracting investments in projects to provide clean water in Kyrgyzstan.
From the republican budget, 350 million soms are provided for clean drinking water for 2019, despite the fact that in 2018 250 million soms were allocated, and in 2014 – 25 million soms.
The President stated that one of the acute problems in the country is the lack of access of the population in some villages to clean drinking water.
“We must implement the Strategy of providing the population with clean drinking water. Without this, we cannot develop the economy, reduce migration, this directly affects the health of the population. The program to provide the population with clean water will certainly be implemented, the population of Kyrgyzstan will have been fully provided with drinking water by 2024. This is a question of the future of our state,” the President said, recalling that providing clean water to all regions of Kyrgyzstan in the next 5 years is one of the priorities until the end of his presidential term.
He noted that the problem with clean drinking water is observed mainly in rural areas and stressed the need to determine the list of villages in need of priority provision of clean water.
Jeenbekov also paid special attention to the need to intensify work to attract foreign investment in the implementation of projects to provide the population with clean water.
