Razakov and EBRD representatives discuss issues of reclaiming uranium tailings in Central Asia

Bishkek, Oct.3, 2018. / Kabar /. Vice Prime Minister Zhenish Razakov met with representatives of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development. During the meeting, the sides discussed the issues aimed at ensuring the environmental safety of uranium hereditary facilities (tailings of the former mining industry) located both in Kyrgyzstan and the entire Central Asian region.

Jenish Razakov noted that the government, in collaboration with interested countries, key international partners and donors, is working to find effective measures to prevent possible environmental problems.

Representatives of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development recalled that the Bank has created a special financial mechanism for the effective accumulation of financial resources in order to provide assistance. At the same time, a Strategic Master Plan has been developed, which addresses the issues of reclaiming uranium objects in a timely, coordinated, cost-effective and sustainable way.

The sides noted that it is necessary to further develop cooperation in the framework of the agreed priority areas of integrated solution of uranium heritage problems for the countries of Central Asia.
