Bishkek, April 30, 2021. / Kabar /. Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kyrgyzstan Ruslan Kazakbaev and Special Representative of the UN Secretary General for Central Asia, Head of the Regional Center for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia (UNRCCA) Natalia Gherman held a telephone conversation on the situation on the Kyrgyz-Tajik border.
The press service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kyrgyz Republic said that Kazakbaev told about the reached agreement between the Kyrgyz and Tajik sides on a ceasefire and the intention to resolve the situation through negotiations. He informed Gherman about the events that took place on April 29, 2021 and the current state of affairs in the border regions of Kyrgyzstan. The head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kyrgyz Republic stressed Bishkek's commitment to international and bilateral obligations and agreements.
At the same time, the minister noted with regret that there were casualties on both sides and briefed on evacuation of local population, destruction of infrastructure and housing as a result of the conflict in Batken. In this regard, he expressed hope for UN support in providing assistance to evacuated persons and their return to their places of permanent residence, as well as in the restoration of destroyed objects. He stressed that these works will become a reliable pillar of sustainable peace. In this regard, the minister expressed an opinion on the need to reorient some of the programs and projects of UN agencies to post-conflict reconstruction in Batken region.
Natalia Gherman welcomed the agreement between the parties on a ceasefire and the signing of the protocol on the settlement of the armed conflict in the border areas of Batken region of the Kyrgyz Republic and Sughd region of Tajikistan. At the same time, she especially noted the contribution of the Kyrgyz side to transferring the situation to a peaceful channel. Gherman expressed the readiness of the UN agencies to provide technical assistance to the parties to the conflict in the implementation of the agreements reached between them within the framework of existing regional and bilateral programs. She said that the UN Secretary General is closely following the events on the border between Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan. The UN headquarters is also aware of the ceasefire agreement reached between the countries. UN calls on both sides to continue direct negotiations to peacefully resolve any outstanding issues.
