Kyrgyz ambassador proposes French side to write off Kyrgyzstan’s external debt in exchange for eco-projects

Bishkek, Feb. 24, 2023. / Kabar/. Ambassador of Kyrgyzstan to France Sadyk Sher-Niyaz, during a meeting with Director of the Department of Continental Europe of the French Foreign Ministry, Frederico Mondolini, proposed writing off the country's external debt in exchange for eco-projects.

During the meeting, a wide range of issues of Kyrgyz-French bilateral and multilateral cooperation was discussed in a friendly and constructive atmosphere. Particular attention is paid to the discussion of the current state and prospects for the further development of political, trade, economic, investment and cultural interaction between the two countries. The mutual intention to expand the political dialogue was confirmed by holding regular Kyrgyz-French inter-MFA political consultations in May in Bishkek, as well as organizing mutual visits at high and highest levels this year.

Sher-Niyaz focused on the need to develop economic, trade, investment relations by establishing a joint Kyrgyz-French Intergovernmental Commission for Economic Cooperation, concluding agreements in the field of avoiding double taxation and protecting investments, as well as organizing the first business forum of Kyrgyz and French entrepreneurs in 2023 in Paris.

The participation of the French company EDF in the implementation of economic projects in Kyrgyzstan was positively assessed and it was proposed to strengthen work in this direction, taking into account the favorable conditions created in the country for French entrepreneurs and investors.

Much attention is paid to the issues of cultural and humanitarian cooperation. The parties noted with satisfaction the start of the work of the Institute of Franco-German Culture in Bishkek.

Taking into account the efforts of France to improve the climate and ecology of the world, the ambassador proposed to consider the issue of writing off external debt in exchange for projects to preserve the environment and green economy.

Discussing the issues of interaction between the two countries within the framework of multilateral diplomacy, Ambassador Sadyk Sher-Niyaz expressed gratitude to the French side for the decision to co-sponsor the UN General Assembly resolution proposed by the President of the Kyrgyz Republic Sadyr Zhaparov to declare 2022 the International Year of Sustainable Development of Mountain Regions.

The parties also exchanged views on the current situation in Central Asia and considered the problems of regional security.

Following the meeting, the parties confirmed their readiness to make joint efforts to further expand cooperation between Kyrgyzstan and France.
