Bishkek, June 14, 2019. /Kabar/. President of the Kyrgyz Republic Sooronbay Jeenbekov met with President of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan Mohammad Ashraf Ghani, who arrived in Kyrgyzstan to attend the meeting of the Council of Heads of State of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO).
The Presidents discussed measures to deepen cooperation between Kyrgyzstan and Afghanistan, topical issues on the joint agenda, including cooperation in the energy sector within the CASA-1000 project, the press service of the Kyrgyz President reported.
Jeenbekov noted that he supports the Afghan President's efforts to strengthen security in the country.
For this purpose, the Kyrgyz side successfully organized the regular meeting of the SCO-Afghanistan working group in Bishkekon on Apr. 19, 2019, within the framework of which the “Roadmap for Further Action” was approved.
The Central Asia-South Asia power project, commonly known by the acronym CASA-1000, is a $1.16 billion project currently under construction that will allow for the export of surplus hydroelectricity from Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan to Afghanistan and Pakistan. Groundbreaking for the project took place in May 2016 by leaders of the four nations. The project is expected to be completed in 2020.
