Bishkek, Oct. 31, 2018. /Kabar/. Deputy Speaker of the Jogorku Kenesh (Kyrgyz Parliament) of the Kyrgyz Republic Mirlan Bakirov and Member of Parliament Ilkhom Mannanov took part in the 1st Global Parliamentary Summit against Hunger and Malnutrition in Madrid (Spain) on October 29-30, the press service of the Kyrgyz Parliament reported.
This summit is held with the organization and support of the UN Food and Agriculture Program (UN FAO), the Senate of Spain, the Parliamentary Front against Hunger and the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation.
In the course of the summit, Deputy Speaker Bakirov made a speech in the second block of discussions on the issues of the challenge in nutrition. Mirlan Bakirov noted that “in Kyrgyzstan malnutrition is an subsantive public health problem.” It was also mentioned the difficulties associated with iodine deficiency among the population of Kyrgyzstan, in particular among women and children. Mirlan Bakirov shared the experience of Kyrgyzstan in the developed and adopted laws that contributed to the improvement of nutrition, as well as its enrichment with microelements. The Deputy Speaker in his speech emphasized the economic potential of growing and further export of organic agricultural products.
Representatives of more than 80 parliaments of the world and inter-parliamentary organizations and unions are taking part in this summit. Most of the summit participants noted that hunger and malnutrition problems are the cause of poor governance and incorrect political decisions, unpreparedness for climate change and its consequences, as well as military conflicts.
The UN FAO reported that 850 million people suffer from hunger and malnutrition in the world, and because of malnutrition in the world, 672 million people are obese and overweight.
