Kyrgyz FM Aidarbekov’s address within UN General Assembly High-Level Meeting

Bishkek, Oct. 3, 2020. /Kabar/. Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kyrgyzstan Chingiz Aidarbekov made a video message in the framework of the UN General Assembly High-Level Meeting dedicated to the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons, the press service of the Kyrgyz Foreign Ministry reported Saturday.

During his speech, Chingiz Aidarbekov emphasized the central role of the United Nations in the field of disarmament, as well as the importance of preserving multilateral mechanisms to achieve a nuclear-free world. In addition, he expressed commitment to the policy of disarmament and prevention of proliferation of weapons of mass destruction as one of the fundamental principles of foreign policy of the Kyrgyz Republic.

The Kyrgyz foreign minister noted the importance of the Central Asian Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone coordinated by Kyrgyzstan this year. In particular, it was emphasized that the Central Asian region is a vivid example of how a nuclear-free zone can contribute to strengthening regional and global nuclear security and peaceful use of nuclear energy.

In this regard, Aidarbekov made an appeal to support the resolution "Treaty on a Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone in Central Asia" to be proposed by the Central Asian states during the current 75th session of the UN General Assembly.

At the same time, the minister drew attention to the problem of environmental consequences of uranium mining, as well as the role of education and training of specialists to promote disarmament and non-proliferation of nuclear weapons.
