Kyrgyz FM and ICRC head discuss priority areas of interaction

Bishkek, April 22, 2021. / Kabar /. Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kyrgyzstan Ruslan Kazakbaev met today with head of the Mission of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in the Kyrgyz Republic Carlos Batallas.

During the meeting, the sides discussed the priority areas of interaction between the Kyrgyz Republic and the ICRC, in particular, projects currently being implemented in the field of international humanitarian law, emergencies, and the penitentiary system. The ICRC's assistance in establishing a comprehensive and sustainable program for the treatment of tuberculosis patients in the country's penitentiary institutions was commended.

In addition, the issue of repatriation of children from Iraq was raised. “The elaboration and implementation of this event took a long time and became possible thanks to the political will of the leadership of our country, with the coordination of the Government’s Office of the Kyrgyz Republic, well-coordinated interdepartmental interaction of state bodies of the country and significant assistance provided by the UN Children's Fund in Bishkek and Baghdad, as well as the National Society of the red crescent,” Kazakbaev emphasized.

The head of ICRC Mission expressed his satisfaction and congratulated the Kyrgyz side on the successful operation of repatriating children from Iraq and noted the ICRC's readiness to provide further assistance in their return, rehabilitation and resocialization.

The minister also asked the ICRC to consider the possibility of providing humanitarian aid to the Kyrgyz of the Great and Small Afghan Pamirs, in the construction of schools and hospitals.

In conclusion, Kazakbaev wished Batallas successful work and confirmed his readiness to continue further fruitful cooperation between the Kyrgyz Republic and the ICRC.
