Kyrgyz FM delivers speech at high-level meeting on occasion of Int’l Day for Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons

Bishkek, Sept. 29, 2021 . / Kabar / . Kyrgyzstan’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Ruslan Kazakbaev addressed a high-level meeting on the occasion of the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons.

Kazakbaev delivered a speech within the framework of the 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly, the press service of the Kyrgyz Foreign Ministry reported.

As the state coordinator of the Central Asian nuclear-free zone, the foreign minister drew attention to the fact that the Central Asian nuclear-free zone makes a significant contribution to the consistent efforts of the world community to reduce nuclear weapons at the global level with the ultimate goal of their complete elimination.

In 2014, for the first time in history, five nuclear-weapon states - China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States - simultaneously signed the Protocol on Negative Security Assurances to the Central Asian Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone Treaty, meaning their guarantees not to use or threaten to use nuclear weapons or other nuclear explosive devices against member states of the Central Asian nuclear-weapon-free zone.

To date, the document has been ratified by Britain, China, France, and Russia. In this connection, Ruslan Kazakbaev called on the remaining parties that have not ratified the Protocol to take the necessary steps for its entry into force.

In addition, the foreign minister of Kyrgyzstan noted that the policy of disarmament and prevention of proliferation of weapons of mass destruction is one of the fundamental principles of Kyrgyzstan's foreign policy.
