Bishkek, April 11, 2022 / Kabar /. Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kyrgyzstan Ruslan Kazakbaev met with a delegation of deputies of the Parliament of the Kingdom of Sweden and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), the press service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kyrgyz Republic reported.
Kazakbaev informed about the important political changes that have taken place in the country over the past year and a half, including the adoption of a new version of the Constitution of the Kyrgyz Republic and parliamentary elections, emphasizing the relevance of supporting the development of the country in a new political system.
Cooperation with Sweden on the implementation of peacebuilding projects in the border areas of Kyrgyzstan was noted as one of the important priorities.
The minister also stressed the importance of cooperation in the field of climate change, biodiversity conservation, and sustainable mountain development. He noted that on the initiative of Kyrgyzstan, on April 16, 2021, the UN General Assembly adopted the resolution “Nature knows no boundaries…”, on November 23, 2021, the UNESCO General Conference adopted the resolution “Expanding monitoring and research of mountain glaciers”, September 21, 2021 at the General Debate of the General Assembly of the United Nations, the President of the Kyrgyz Republic announced the initiative to announce the "Five Years of Action for the Development of Mountainous Regions". Ruslan Kazakbaev called on the Swedish side to cooperate on the practical implementation of these initiatives.
Ruslan Kazakbaev stressed that the visit of the parliamentary delegation to Kyrgyzstan will allow holding meaningful meetings with government agencies, which allows discussing the main areas for cooperation between the two countries, and in turn, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kyrgyz Republic is always ready to assist in the further development of relations with Sweden.
The delegation of Swedish parliamentarians noted that their country is an important donor of the UN Development Program. In this context, they thanked Kazakbaev for informing about the development priorities of the Kyrgyz Republic.
Member of the Swedish Parliament and Chairperson of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly Margareta Sederfeldt noted that her country considers the areas of adaptation and mitigation of climate change, water use, job creation, labor migration, gender equality as priority areas for cooperation with the Kyrgyz Republic and support for UNDP projects in Kyrgyzstan.
At the same time, she informed that in June 2022 Sweden would hold a high-level meeting "Stockholm + 50" on environmental protection and sustainable development and expressed hope for the participation of the leadership of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Kyrgyz Republic in this event.
At the end of the meeting, the sides agreed to continue the dialogue on all issues of mutual interest.
Members of the Swedish Parliament arrived in Kyrgyzstan for a learning exchange visit from 10 to 15 April 2022.
