Bishkek, April 23, 2021. / Kabar /. Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kyrgyzstan Ruslan Kazakbaev took part in the online meeting of foreign ministers of Central Asia countries and the United States ("С5 + 1"), the press service of the ministry said.
The meeting participants discussed topical issues on the regional agenda, including security, economic development, cooperation in overcoming the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as the topic of climate change.
Minister Kazakbaev voiced the national priorities of the Kyrgyz Republic in accordance with the agenda, proposing to fill the interaction within the format with practical content, taking into account the economic difficulties caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Thus, as assistance to the peaceful development of Afghanistan, Minister Kazakbaev noted the importance of implementing specific investment projects between Kyrgyzstan and Afghanistan with the assistance of the United States.
Concerning overcoming the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic, the position of the Kyrgyz Republic was expressed on the need for a fair distribution of vaccines against coronavirus in the world, ensuring equal access to vaccines.
Continuing the topic of the consequences of the pandemic, Kazakbaev noted the importance of easing the debt burden for developing countries in the context of the observed economic recession. A suitable mechanism for this could be a debt swap for projects in the field of ecology and climate change.
In general, in terms of climate change, the resolution adopted unanimously by the UN General Assembly on April 16, 2021, entitled "Nature knows no boundaries", initiated by the Kyrgyz Republic, was noted in a positive way. It was also announced the intention of the Kyrgyz Republic to initiate a new Resolution on declaring 2022 as the International Year of Mountains within the UN, as well as to hold the Second Bishkek Global Mountain Summit in 2022. Separately, the need to implement joint projects to preserve glaciers in the mountain ecosystems of the upstream countries, as well as to reduce the risks posed by tailing dumps, was noted.
The meeting participants agreed on the need to jointly overcome pressing regional problems, which was reflected in the final statement adopted at the end of the meeting.
