Bishkek, June 16, 2021 . / Kabar / . KGS 700 million will be allocated from the republican budget to restore Batken Oblast after a conflict on the Kyrgyz-Tajik border, Deputy Minister of Economy and Finance of Kyrgyzstan Aidin Sharsheyev said at parliamentary session Wednesday.
He noted that KGS 200 million have already been provided.
"These funds will be used mainly to restore infrastructure in the regions affected by the conflict - water, light, and roads. Construction of houses that were destroyed will be financed by the private sector. Also, the Cabinet of Ministers is allocating a separate item of compensation to people injured - KGS 1 million for families of the victims, and KGS 50-100 thousand for those injured,” the deputy minister added.
An armed conflict on the Kyrgyz-Tajik state border occurred on April 28 after citizens of Tajikistan began installing video surveillance cameras at the water intake in the village of Kok-Tash in Batken Oblast of Kyrgyzstan.
As a result of the verbal altercation, the residents of the two countries began throwing stones at each other. On April 29 the situation escalated, the Tajik side opened fire. The armed forces of the Kyrgyz border service retaliated.
The situation stabilized only on May 1 after negotiations between heads of the State Committees for National Security of Kyrgyzstan Kamchybek Tashiev and Tajikistan Saimumin Yatimov. The parties agreed on a complete cease-fire and the withdrawal of non-border guard forces to their locations.
As a result of the armed attack, 36 Kyrgyz citizens were killed, including three servicemen, and the rest were civilians, including two young children.
The Prosecutor General’s Office of Kyrgyzstan considered the actions of the Tajik side as military aggression.
