Kyrgyz MPs to consider draft of new Constitution next week

Bishkek, Feb. 10, 2021. / Kabar /. Deputies of the Jogorku Kenesh (Kyrgyz Parliament) will consider a draft of the new Constitution on Feb. 17. Speaker Talant Mamatov announced the initiators propose to consider the draft of the new Basic Law next Wednesday.

He noted members of the Constitutional Counsel referred the draft to the Parliament.

"Proposals were made to consider next week the draft of the new Constitution with all the additions," the speaker said.

The Constitutional Counsel completed work on the new Constitution. The initiated Basic Law proposes to introduce a presidential form of government.

On Nov. 17, 2020, a group of Kyrgyz MPs submitted for public discussion a draft law on calling a referendum on the draft of a new version of the Constitution of the Kyrgyz Republic. The new Constitution differs significantly from the current one adopted in 2010 (as amended in 2016).

According to the Central Elections Commission of Kyrgyzstan, at a Jan. 10 Referendum of the form of governance the majority of citizens voted in favour of presidential form of government - 81.49%.
