Kyrgyz Parliament speaker discusses cooperation with members of European Parliament

Bishkek, Aug. 24, 2023. /Kabar/. Speaker of the Jogorku Kenesh Nurlanbek Shakiev met with a delegation led by Chairman of the Committee on International Affairs of the European Parliament David McAllister.

During the meeting, issues of developing cooperation between Kyrgyzstan and European countries, expanding inter-parliamentary ties were discussed.

Shakiev noted that such meetings contribute to the strengthening of bilateral relations. “Kyrgyzstan is always interested in developing cooperation with the European Union. In particular, we strive to deepen interaction with the parliaments of European countries and active cooperation with the European Parliament,” he said.

In addition, the speaker, recalling that the meeting of the Inter-Parliamentary Cooperation Committee will be held in Bishkek in December this year, stressed the importance of this event for Kyrgyzstan.

“As a country that strives to continuously pursue democratic, political and socio-economic reforms, we will continue to work closely with all parties, including the countries of Europe. After all, only an open and constructive dialogue will help strengthen the partnership,” Shakiev said.

In turn, the chairman of the Committee on International Affairs of the European Parliament, David McAllister, spoke about the main purpose of the visit and noted that in the Development Strategy of the European Parliament until 2029, special attention is paid to expanding cooperation with the countries of Central Asia.

“Kyrgyzstan is a special country for us. The country's achievements in the field of democracy are significant in comparison with other states. Therefore, the European Parliament is always interested in developing the existing relations with Kyrgyzstan,” said David McAllister.

During the meeting, the parties also discussed issues in the field of protecting human rights, maintaining freedom of speech and strengthening regional security.
