Kyrgyz Parliament starts considering new draft of Constitution

Bishkek, Feb. 17, 2021. / Kabar /. The Jogorku Kenesh (Kyrgyz Parliament) started considering a new draft of the Constitution.

Earlier, a group of deputies initiated the draft of the new Basic Law. A Constitutional Counsel consisting of lawyers, scientists, representatives of other spheres and the public has been formed for public discussions. Members of the Counsel were considering the new draft for more than two months, after which they referred it to the Jogorku Kenesh.

On Nov. 17, 2020, the draft Constitution of the Kyrgyz Republic was published on the official website of the Jogorku Kenesh for public discussion. By decree of Acting President, Speaker of the Parliament Talant Mamytov, the Constitutional Counsel was formed on Nov. 20, 2020.

The Counsel, chaired by Bekbosun Borubashov, reviewed the draft Constitution initiated by MPs and submitted it with their proposals to the initiators for discussion.

The new Constitution differs significantly from the current one adopted in 2010 (as amended in 2016).

In particular, it implies changing a form government .

It is also proposed to reduce the number of deputies from 120 to 90.
