Bishkek, Sept. 19, 2023. /Kabar/. President of Kyrgyzstan Sadyr Zhaparov, as part of the events of the High-Level Week of the 78th session of the UN General Assembly, held in New York (USA), met with Administrator of the UN Development Program Akim Steiner.
An exchange of views took place on cooperation between Kyrgyzstan and the UN, issues related to supporting reforms of the Kyrgyz Republic and the practical implementation of its international initiatives were discussed.
The head of state drew attention to the importance of implementing the program to support Kyrgyzstan in the field of sustainable development and ensuring food security.
Sadyr Zhaparov noted that in 2023, half of the time allocated for the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development will end.
In this regard, the president emphasized that the Sustainable Development Goals Summit, held within the framework of the 78th session of the UN General Assembly, is a very important and relevant event. Comprehensive measures are being taken at the national level to implement sustainable development goals in Kyrgyzstan.
He noted that the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals is part of the country’s strategic programs.
Sadyr Zhaparov proposed deepening cooperation in the fields of agriculture, hydropower, renewable energy, tourism, education, transport and digitalization.
In particular, the head of state noted a major project of three countries - the construction of the Kambar-Ata hydroelectric power station-1, which is being implemented by Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan. This project is open to all international investors.
In addition, the Kyrgyz side relies on the support of the UN Development Program in the implementation of environmental and “green” projects, as well as support for achieving goals to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Sadyr Zhaparov drew Akim Steiner’s attention to the situation related to global climate change, which has led to intensive melting of mountain glaciers.
The problems and challenges of mountainous countries should not be the problem of mountainous countries only; common efforts to solve mountain problems should be focused on the global community.
In turn, Akim Steiner expressed words of gratitude to the Kyrgyz president for the meeting, noting the attention paid by Sadyr Zhaparov to important sectors of the country’s economy.
The UNDP administrator emphasized that other states have a lot to learn from Kyrgyzstan, given how the country’s position is growing in the ranking for sustainable development.
For his part, he assured of his readiness to begin working in the near future in the priority areas of Kyrgyzstan, which were previously identified within the framework of cooperation.
UNDP Administrator Akim Steiner proposed increasing cooperation with Kyrgyzstan on issues of digitalization and the green economy.
