Kyrgyz President participates in High-Level Event on Financing for Development in Era of COVID-19 and Beyond

Bishkek, May 28, 2020 / Kabar /. Today, President of Kyrgyzstan Sooronbay Jeenbekov took part in the High-Level Event on Financing for Development in Era of COVID-19 and Beyond, his press service said.

The forum is organized by the governments of Canada and Jamaica - as the founders of the Friends Groups of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

The event was held in the form of a videoconference, during which the reports were made by the UN Secretary General Anthonio Guterres, leaders of Germany, France, Switzerland, Italy, Great Britain, Spain, Canada, Argentina, Japan, Saudi Arabia, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, South Africa, Algeria, Ghana and other countries of Europe, America, Asia, Africa.

Heads of international organizations and financial institutions also delivered speeches.

At the invitation of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Prime Minister of Jamaica Andrew Holness and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, President of Kyrgyzstan Sooronbay Jeenbekov participated in this international forum and made a number of proposals to support countries in achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals in this situation.

In particular, Sooronbay Jeenbekov noted the need for a “deep” restructuring of external debt, including to multilateral creditors.

Jeenbekov also proposed to develop a program for the exchange of debt for projects in the field of health, social support and food security.

In addition, he emphasized the need to develop a program for the exchange of debt for projects in the field of ecology, climate change and the green economy.

President Jeenbekov expressed gratitude to the UN system and other development partners for supporting Kyrgyzstan in this difficult time. He also thanked the G20 countries and the Paris Club for the initiative to suspend payments on government debt for Kyrgyzstan.
