Bishkek, Jan. 23, 2023 / Kabar/. Presidential press secretary Erbol Sultanbaev commented on the appeal of two US senators to Sadyr Zhaparov, allegedly due to pressure on the media in the country.
Sultanbaev said that it became known from the media that two US senators sent an appeal to President Zhaparov regarding the situation around Azattyk Media, which expresses concern about the alleged pressure on freedom of speech in the country.
"It is noted that this allegedly violates international standards regarding freedom of speech and the press and the guarantees given by the country's Constitution.
I would like to remind you that the decision to suspend the work of the Azattyk Media website by the hosting provider for 2 months was made by the Ministry of Culture, Information, Sports and Youth Policy in connection with the dissemination of false information about the events of September 14-17, 2022 in Batken region," he wrote.
Sultanbaev notes that prior to the adoption of this decision, the Ministry sent written notices to the editorial office of Azattyk Media several times.
"In accordance with applicable law, the site has been suspended.
That is, it was not a deliberate measure, but a response to a violation of the current legislation of the country, which prohibits the dissemination of false information.
Kyrgyzstan is a free, democratic country where there are all conditions for the full functioning of independent media.
I repeat once again, the only requirement for everyone is strict observance of the current legislation," the press secretary of the head of state said.
