Bishkek, Mar.11, 2020. /Kabar/. Kyrgyz truckers, forced to stay in Iran, have begun crossing the border, the Foreign Ministry press service said.
As is known, due to preventive measures taken by neighboring countries with Iran to prevent the penetration of coronavirus infection (COVID-19), currently about 62 Kyrgyz truckers are forced to stay in Iran.
They were unable to cross the Iranian-Turkmen and Iranian-Azerbaijani borders to return in transit to Kyrgyzstan.
As part of consideration of the return of Kyrgyzstani truck drivers, the Kyrgyz side, together with the competent agencies of Azerbaijan has worked out issue of obtaining a transit corridor through the territory of that country.
As of Mar. 9 this year, there were 23 trucks on the Iranian-Azerbaijani border. Since Mar. 9-11, 11 trucks passed through Astara checkpoint (Azerbaijani-Iranian border).
The remaining 12 drivers and their vehicles are expected to pass through the passport and customs control procedure.
The Foreign Ministry and the Kyrgyz Embassies in Baku and Tehran keep under special control issue of Kyrgyz cargo carriers' departure from Iran, as well as their transit movement through Azerbaijan.
On Mar. 7, 2020 the employees of the Kyrgyz Embassy in Iran visited the Sarakhs and Lutfabad checkpoints to provide the necessary consular and legal assistance and support to the Kyrgyz cargo carriers.
Taking into account the recommendations of WHO and the experience of other states, due to the risk of coronavirus spread on the territory of Azerbaijan, on Feb.29, 2020 the State Border Service of Azerbaijan closed the border with Iran for two weeks on the basis of restrictive regime.
