Bishkek, Jan. 28, 2019. /Kabar/. A conference was held in Bishkek in which youth activists from all over Kyrgyzstan presented the results of a nationwide information campaign to raise public awareness about the problems of human trafficking.
The “100 Days against Trafficking in Persons” campaign in the country is taking place for the second year, informing an increasing number of citizens about the situation with this serious crime.
The second campaign was attended by 80 young leaders representing 30 youth organizations in Kyrgyzstan. Young people worked together with local authorities, civil society and the media in all regions of the country and major cities, including Bishkek and Osh.
The events are held within the framework of the state program of the Kyrgyz Republic on combating trafficking in persons in Kyrgyzstan, designed for 2017-2020. The campaign is coordinated by the State Agency for Youth, Physical Culture and Sports and the State Migration Service under the Government of the Kyrgyz Republic.
“The government is committed to combating human trafficking. Considering that raising public awareness is one of the most effective preventive measures, we are ready to consolidate the results of the campaign by developing a strategy that will ensure adequate funding and conduct such activities on an ongoing basis,” Vice Prime Minister Altynay Omurbekova told.
In addition, the campaign proves that large-scale labor migration is a significant risk factor in the slave trade issue, given that migrants are more prone to illegal exploitation.
“The United Nations system is ready to assist the Government of the Kyrgyz Republic in the implementation of the vision on migration and development issues set out in the National Development Strategy of the Kyrgyz Republic for 2018-2040. This requires the development of a comprehensive migration policy, which will direct the benefits of migration processes to socio-economic development in the regions,” UN Resident Coordinator Ozonnia Ojielo.
He also added that during the campaign topical issues such as violence against children and illegal adoption were hotly debated. He stressed that child protection is the organization’s top priority. It welcome new measures to introduce electronic registration of newborns and patients in maternity hospitals.
