Bishkek, Feb. 21, 2022. / Kabar /. The Ministry of Labour, Social Security and Migration of Kyrgyzstan and the UN World Food Program (WFP) have launched an innovative pilot project in Kadamjai and Jumgal regions to help 100 poor families lift themselves out of poverty, the press service of the ministry said.
As part of the pilot project "Social assistance to low-income families based on a social contract", a one-time cash grant of KGS 100,000 will be provided to support the local population.
The “Social Contract” is an agreement between low-income families and the state, under which vulnerable families receive a cash grant to start an income-generating activity along with a comprehensive support package that includes financial literacy training, assistance in developing a business plan, vocational or agricultural training, social services and mentoring to successfully run a long-term livelihood business.
The project targets households living below the poverty line with business ideas, start-up assets and basic knowledge for proposed activities such as animal husbandry, dairy sales, sewing services, greenhouses and other initiatives.
In certain cases, social contracts are also implemented in partnership with local businesses and entrepreneurs who create sustainable employment opportunities for targeted low-income families.
The pilot project will also serve as a learning opportunity to improve the project's strategy for further expansion.
The UN World Food Program is the world's largest humanitarian organization that fights hunger around the world, supplies emergency food, and works with local communities to build resilience and improve nutrition. Every year, WFP helps about 80 million people in 80 countries around the world.
