Bishkek, Oct. 15, 2024. /Kabar/. Minister of Natural Resources, Environment and Technical Supervision of Kyrgyzstan Meder Mashiyev took part in a high-level event within the framework of the 29th Pre-Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (Pre-CC), held on Oct. 9-12 in Baku, Azerbaijan.

The press service of the Environment Ministry reported that the purpose of the event was to prepare for the upcoming 29th Conference of the Parties, which will be held on Nov. 11-22 in Baku. During the 29th Pre-CC, all participants had the opportunity to share their ideas and visions on enhancing the effectiveness of global efforts to combat climate change, as well as voiced their concerns and needs.

The main focus of the 29th Pre-CC is on three main themes: new collective quality targets for climate finance, adaptation, loss and damage, and mitigation.

In its statement, the Kyrgyz delegation noted that climate change issues pose a serious threat to the Kyrgyz Republic as well.

“The Kyrgyz Republic, more than anyone else knows that climate change is not an abstract threat, but a reality that we are already facing. In our mountainous country, we are especially aware of the fragility of the ecosystems that are our home. The glaciers that provide water to millions of people in Central Asia are rapidly melting. We must act decisively now, because tomorrow may be too late. That is why Kyrgyzstan has taken responsibility for promoting the Mountain Agenda,” Minister Mashiyev said in his speech.

During the event, a bilateral meeting was also held between the Kyrgyz delegation and President of COP-29, Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources of Azerbaijan Mukhtar Babayev.

Within the framework of this meeting, a protocol of intentions was signed between the Ministries of Ecology of Kyrgyzstan and Azerbaijan in order to implement the memorandum of cooperation in the field of environmental protection.
