Bishkek, Dec. 25, 2024. /Kabar/. Kazakhstan’s Almaty hosted a meeting of the regional working group on forensic capacity and drugs. The event was by representatives from Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Pakistan and Iran.
The main purpose of the meeting was to discuss current problems related to the identification, apprehension and examination of narcotic drugs, including new synthetic drugs. The program included presentations, reports, as well as a study visit to the forensic laboratory of the Ministry of Justice of Kazakhstan.
Deputy Head of the Department of Forensic Examination of Materials, Substances and Products of the Forensic Expert Service under the Ministry of Justice of Kyrgyzstan Nurlan Momunkulov presented statistics on incoming narcotic substances and outlined key challenges - the need to improve the qualifications of experts and difficulties in acquiring standard drug samples.
As a result of the meeting, the participants made a number of recommendations:
-supporting specialized training courses and the introduction of modern technologies;
-providing laboratories in the region with modern equipment, reagents and updated drug libraries;
- developing international cooperation through participation in the International Cooperative Exercise (ICE) and the Early Warning Portal on New Psychoactive Substances (EWA), as well as supporting countries in obtaining international accreditation of laboratories according to ISO 17025 standards.
The event was organized with the support of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) as part of the regional programme for Afghanistan and neighbouring countries.
