Kyrgyzstan, Austria hold side event on safe management of weapons

Bishkek, Oct.18, 2024. /Kabar/. The Permanent Mission of the Kyrgyz Republic to the international organizations in Vienna organized a side event on “Safe management of weapons and ammunition stockpiles - contributing to the protection of civilians, reducing environmental risks and combating illicit trafficking”.

The event was organized together with the Permanent Mission of Austria to the UN, the OSCE and the UNODC.

The Kyrgyz Foreign Ministry reported that Permanent Representative of Austria to the UN Gabriela Zellner made a welcoming speech at the UN International Center.

In turn, Permanent Representative of Kyrgyzstan Tolendy Makeyev made a presentation on the country's achievements in combating illicit trafficking and safe management of small arms and ammunition within the framework of the project implemented in Kyrgyzstan through the OSCE and UNODC with the participation of the Austrian Federal Ministry of Defense.

In his presentation, the permanent representative of Kyrgyzstan shared the positive practical experience of the Kyrgyz side in protecting civilians, reducing environmental risks, and combating illicit trafficking in small arms and light weapons.

He noted the role of the Secretariat of the Security Council of the Kyrgyz Republic as the National Coordinator in this area. Makeyev expressed gratitude to international organizations and donor countries for their financial and technical support to the project.

Further, representatives of the OSCE Cynthia Oskalny, Austrian Ministry of Defense Stefan Sander, UNODC Simonetta Grassi made a presentation. The side event concluded with a Q&A session with the participants and invitees.
