Bishkek, Dec.12, 2019 /Kabar/. Yesterday, Dec. 11, along with the rest of the world, Kyrgyzstan celebrated Mountain Day.
The solemn event under the motto “Only mountains can be better than mountains” was held at the NABU (Nature and Biodiversity Conversation Union of Germany)-Kyrgyzstan, the press service of the Union reported Thursday.
During the celebration, Head of the Monitoring Department of NABU-Kyrgyzstan Jyrgalbek Sagyndykov noted scientific research of wildlife is carried out in the mountains at altitudes up to 4200 meters above sea level, since it is there that many red-listed animals live, including the snow leopard, which the Kyrgyz call the master of the celestial mountains.
Ecologists, students and schoolchildren took part in the event.
Dec. 11, International Mountain Day, was designated by the United Nations General Assembly in 2003. The General Assembly "encouraged the international community to organize events at all levels on that day to highlight the importance of sustainable mountain development."
Mountains occupy almost ¼ of the world and are home to many animal species and unique plants. Moreover, mountains are the source of water resources of the main rivers in the world. Hiding many minerals and fossils in their depths, mountains are also subject to natural and anthropogenic threats.
Kyrgyzstan is 93 percent mountainous and mostly lies on land situated at elevations between 1,000 meters and 7,400 meters. More than 40 percent of Kyrgyzstan is above 3,000 meters and three quarters of that is under permanent snow or glaciers, with 600 glaciers, covering 6,578 square kilometers. Mountains in the central part of the country effectively isolate the northern and southern populations of Kyrgyzstan, especially in the winter, when snow closes many of the roads.
