Bishkek, 23.10.19. /Кабар/. Kyrgyzstan celebrates Snow Leopard Day annually on Oct.23.
Today according to the records of the number of wild animals, there are about 350-400 snow leopard animals in Kyrgyzstan, the press service of the State Agency for Environmental Protection and Forestry (SAEPF) said.
The total area suitable for the snow leopard in the country is about 45% (89,000 km2) of the total area of the country, i.e. almost half of the territory of Kyrgyzstan. The snow leopard is found in the Northern, Central, Western Tian Shan and Pamir-Alay Ranges.
In a relatively small area of Kyrgyzstan, three most important landscapes for the snow leopard are identified: Central Tian Shan, and Gissar-Alai and Western Tien Shan transboundary landscapes, and planning for the management of the landscape of the Central Tian Shan, the largest snow leopard habitat in Kyrgyzstan, has been initiated.
In recent years (since 2016), the State Agency has increased the area of protected areas by more than 350 thousand hectares. At present, issues on establishment of other protected areas in the territory of Osh and Batken Oblasts are being considered.
In order to track snow leopard movements and monitor daily activity of animals, SAEPF together with scientists of the Academy of Sciences and the Panther International Organization installed 7 satellite collars on snow leopards and 2 - on wolves.
The State Agency also developed a draft resolution of the Government of the Kyrgyz Republic “On Approval of the Priorities for the Conservation of Biological Diversity of the Kyrgyz Republic for the period up to 2030 and the Action Plan for the implementation of the Priorities for the Conservation of Biological Diversity of the Kyrgyz Republic for 2019-2023”.
This project envisages certain measures, related to the conservation of the snow leopard population in Kyrgyzstan.
The “Snow Leopard Cup” Republican Children’s Ice Hockey Tournament was held in Bishkek by the Snow Leopard Day.
