Kyrgyzstan considers it important to make decision on uranium tailings in CIS countries-PM

Moscow, Oct.25, 2019. /Kabar/. At the regular meeting of the Council of Heads of Government of the Commonwealth of independent States (CIS CHG) Kyrgyz Prime Minister Mukhammedklayi Abylgaziev noted the importance of making decisions in the issue of uranium tailings in the CIS countries.

The narrow format meeting is taking place at the Skolkovo Innovation Center in Moscow.

During his speech, PM Abylgaziev noted the ongoing CIS Interstate Target Program for the remediation of areas, affected by uranium mining industries, and thanked the Russian and Kazakh sides for their support in this area.

“As you know, the environmental risks, posed by uranium tailings dumps, located in Central Asia, including Kyrgyzstan, are a serious problem that poses a potential threat to the entire region.

In this regard, we attach great importance to the timely resolution of issues of ensuring environmental safety from radioactive contamination and the restoration of the natural environment,” the prime minister stressed.

He also noted realizing the importance of reducing the threat of emergency situations with radio-ecological consequences in the territories of the member states of this Target Program, the Kyrgyz side welcomes the adoption of the relevant decision of the Council, and expresses the hope that it will contribute to the further provision of safe living conditions for the population and environmental rehabilitation of natural facilities in the Central Asian region.
