Bishkek, Jan. 23, 2020. / Kabar /. US Ambassador to Kyrgyzstan Donald Lu did not confirm information that the United States of America intends to introduce visa restrictions for citizens of Kyrgyzstan, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kyrgyzstan Chingiz Aidarbekov told at a press conference.
After the information was released on Jan. 22, the US Ambassador to the Kyrgyz Republic Donald Lu was invited to the Foreign Ministry with whom consultations were held.
“The Kyrgyz side drew attention to possible negative consequences that may arise as a result of such a decision, because they concern ordinary citizens of Kyrgyzstan,” he said.
Minister Aidarbekov, the said that the US ambassador did not confirm the disseminated information.
“The parties are consulting on this issue. According to reports, this proposal was made by US law enforcement. In 2017, the President of the United States signed a law that in 2020, entry will be limited to citizens of countries where biometric passports do not work. Of the CIS countries, one of the countries where biometric passports are not issued is Kyrgyzstan,” he said.
Aidarbekov said that Kyrgyzstan hopes that a balanced decision will be made on the possible restriction of visa issuance, taking into account the objective situation.
He said that Kyrgyzstan is doing a lot of work on digitalization, which includes, among other things, issuing biometric passports.
The Minister said that today there are objective reasons for not issuing biometric passports in Kyrgyzstan.
