Kyrgyzstan earns first silver at Paris Olympics

Bishkek, Aug. 7, 2024 . / Kabar / . Kyrgyz female wrestler Meerim Zhumanazarova won a silver medal at the Olympic Games in Paris.

She competed in the freestyle wrestling tournament in the 68kg weight class.

The Kyrgyzstani started Aug. 5 at the 1/8 finals stage, where she defeated Mongolia's Dalgermaa Ensaikhan and then snatched victory from world champion Nonoka Ozaki of Japan in the final seconds.

In the semifinals, Zhumanazarova fought against 13-time African champion Blessing Oborududu and won 3-1 to advance to the Olympic finals for the first time in her career.

On Aug. 6, in the final bout, the Kyrgyz female wrestler fought against the eight-time world champion in various age categories from the United States. The bout ended 3-0 in favor of the U.S. athlete.

Thus, Meerim Zhumanazarova took the 2nd place and won the silver medal.

The medal was Kyrgyzstan's second at the Paris Games and ninth in history. Earlier, wrestler Zholaman Sharshenbekov won bronze.
