Bishkek, June 28, 2024. /Kabar/. The international Shyrdak (national rug made from felt) festival has started on Friday in Naryn city in the “As A Nomad” ethnocomplex.
The festival presents more than one thousand original works of needlewomen.
The festival program includes an exhibition of shyrdaks, national utensils and costumes. Also, master classes of artisans, a cultural event “Sarmerden” and a demonstration of national games are organized for participants.
The event is attended by guests from Turkiye, the UAE, Uzbekistan, and Kazakhstan. Also, more than 100 needlewomen arrived from all the regions of the country.
Tomueva Bardakan came to the festival from Kok-Serek village of Jalal-Abad Oblast of Kyrgyzstan. She has been participating in this festitval for the third time.
“But handicrafts from Jalal-Abad have been participating for many years. This is very useful to participate in such events, because we exchange experience with each other and find customers for ourselves," she said.
The guest of the festival 53 years old Armelle Vaisson came to Kyrgyzstan with his husband 2 weeks ago as a tourist.
“We were interested to come here today because I think it’s a way to discover Kyrgyz people’s way of living and to see traditional handcraft. We really enjoy the view today," she said.
Shyrdak is a Kyrgyz national rug made in the complex mosaic technique. The word “shyrdak” comes from the word “shyryk”, which means stitching – this is one of the main processes in creating a shyrdak, which makes it very strong and durable.
In 2012, Kyrgyz felt carpets ala-kiyiz and shyrdak were inscribed into the UNESCO List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
