Kyrgyzstan initiates to hold set of events dedicated to problems of mountainous countries

Bishkek, Dec. 11, 2021. / Kabar /. The International Mountain Day has been celebrating around the world on Dec. 11, which was initiated by the Kyrgyz Republic and approved on Jan. 30, 2003 at the 57th session of the UN General Assembly.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Kyrgyzstan said that in honor of this significant date, the ministry held a meeting with members of the Coordination Council of Development Partners chaired by Deputy Minister Azizbek Madmarov. During the meeting, a presentation was made to international donors of the concept of the UN Five Years of Action for the Development of Mountain Regions (for the period 2023-2027), initiated by President of the Kyrgyz Republic Sadyr Zhaparov during the General Debate of the 76th session of the UN General Assembly on Sept. 21, 2021.

The main idea of ​​the initiative is the formation of an official category of mountainous countries within the UN, as well as the holding in the next five years of a set of events dedicated to the problems of mountainous countries. The preparation process for these events should contribute to the development of ideas that contribute to the spread of knowledge about mountain regions in the world, their global significance, sustainable socio-economic development of mountain regions, as well as the development of mutually beneficial cooperation between mountain states in the field of economy, science, education and cultural exchanges.

The deputy minister stressed that the organization of such a large set of events is not possible without political, financial and technical support from the development partners of the Kyrgyz Republic and the member states of the Group of Friends of Mountain Countries, and expressed hope for joint cooperation on this initiative.

The participants of the meeting positively assessed the initiative of Kyrgyzstan and shared their views and ideas on its content. Following the meeting, the sides agreed to continue consultations at the expert level to find common ground and jointly implement the tasks laid down in the concept of the Five Years of Action for the Development of Mountain Regions.
