Bishkek, March 22 / Kabar /. Due to global warming mountainous countries are at risk, chairman of the State Committee for Industry, Energy and Mining of Kyrgyzstan Duishenbek Zilaliev told Kabar Agency.
According to a new report by the UN Children's Fund (UNICEF), published on World Water Day, Kyrgyzstan is one of the most vulnerable countries to climate change in Central Asia.
"Climate change has a direct impact on the distribution of water resources. In Kyrgyzstan, for 20 years, the average temperature increased from 4.8°C to 6°C. According to the most pessimistic forecasts for this century the average temperature in Kyrgyzstan may rise to 8°C from today's average temperature. Because of its geographical location, Kyrgyzstan is one of the most vulnerable countries to climate change in Central Asia,” said UNICEF's climate change expert Nicholas Molyneux.
Zilaliev said that several authoritative international organizations have published reports on the results of their research, in which they say that global warming will affect first of all alpine countries.
"In this regard, all mountainous countries are at risk. In our region, unfortunately, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan are at risk. By the way, the Paris Convention on Climate Change was signed in 2015," he said.
Zilaliev said that glaciers are melting in Kyrgyzstan, and it's actually a natural process.
