Kyrgyzstan marks Earth Day

Bishkek, Apr. 24, 2020. /Kabar/. Earth Day is an annual event celebrated since 1970 around the world on Apr. 22 to demonstrate support for environmental protection.

The State Agency for Environmental Protection and Forestry of the Kyrgyz Republic (SAEPF) holds a number of environmental events dedicated to the International Earth Day.

As part of the Earth Day, employees of the SAEPF Department of Biodiversity Conservation and Specially Protected Areas installed information banners and panels on the territory of natural parks and reserves, which contain information on the conservation of wild animals living in Kyrgyzstan, measures of responsibility for their illegal use, and fees to calculate the amount of penalties for damages caused to wildlife and cleanliness and order.

The main goal of the environmental activity is to attract public and young people's attention to the conservation of the unique ecosystem and biodiversity of Kyrgyzstan.

Employees of the Biodiversity Conservation Department installed more than 50 banners, over 100 birdhouses, and planted more than 40 hectares of seedlings of fruit breeds of walnuts and conifers of Tienshan spruce.

In the course of the campaign, the employees also carried out a large-scale work on improvement, sanitary purification and landscaping of park areas and protected areas.

"In connection with the epidemiological situation in the country, all field work is carried out in strict compliance with all sanitary standards and requirements," the press service of the State Agency for Environmental Protection and Forestry of the Kyrgyz Republic said.

According to the order of SAEPF Director Mirslav Amankulov, the ecological campaign within the International Earth Day will be held throughout the country and last until the end of April.

Earth Day is an annual event celebrated around the world on Apr. 22 to demonstrate support for environmental protection. First celebrated in 1970, it now includes events coordinated globally by the Earth Day Network in more than 193 countries.

Earth Day 2020 is the 50th Anniversary of Earth Day. Celebrations included activities such as the Great Global CleanUp, Citizen Science, Advocacy, Education, and art. This year's theme for Earth Day 2020 was "climate action". Due to the coronavirus outbreak turned pandemic, many of the planned activities were moved online. Celebratory activities centered around five components: citizen science, volunteering, community engagement, education, and the role of art in furthering the cause.
