On the margins of the 12th Ministerial Conference of the World Trade Organization (WTO) in Geneva, Minister of Economy and Commerce of Kyrgyzstan Daniyar Amangeldiev met with Director-General of the Department of International Trade and Economic Affairs at the Ministry of Commerce of China Yu Benlin.
In the course of the meeting, the Kyrgyz minister raised the issue of the mode of operation of checkpoints on the border between China and Kyrgyzstan, which is the main land transport artery for trade and economic cooperation between the two countries.
"By expanding the capacity of the checkpoints, there is need to increase the flow of goods for unhindered exports and imports, which decreased significantly during the COVID-19 pandemic," Amangeldiev said.
He stressed that there are still some restrictive quarantine measures in place at the checkpoints on the Kyrgyz-Chinese border, the removal of which should bring the level of trade turnover to the pre-pandemic level.
In order to develop effective tools to achieve an even higher level of throughput of goods, the minister suggested that the Chinese side begin developing a bilateral Kyrgyz-Chinese agreement on trade facilitation, which would lay the basic elements of a WTO agreement to improve customs and near-customs infrastructure between the countries.
In response, the Chinese side said that this issue should be raised during the meeting of the 15th Kyrgyz-Chinese Intergovernmental Commission.
