Bishkek, June 16 2022. / Kabar /. Kyrgyzstan pays special attention to the negative impact of climate change on the unique mountain nature, Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Kyrgyz Republic Akylbek Zhaparov said this during his speech at the Second Regional Summit on the Sustainable Development Goals “Beyond COVID - on the way to a fair recovery in Central Asia” in Almaty (Kazakhstan), the press service of the Cabinet reported.
The head of the Cabinet of Ministers noted the timeliness of convening a regional forum to review the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals.
“Obviously, due to the coronavirus pandemic and its negative socio-economic consequences, we are behind the schedule for implementing the Sustainable Development Goals. It is encouraging that by common efforts we have stopped the coronavirus threat with vaccination measures and are protecting the life and health of our citizens. Now our common goal is to collectively move forward in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals and consolidate the achieved results. The Kyrgyz Republic is committed to the implementation of the international sustainable development agenda and adheres to the global commitment to “leaving no one behind”. The sustainable development goals are taken into account in state policy measures and integrated into the National Development Strategy of the Kyrgyz Republic until 2040. Currently, national counterparts have been developed for 140 out of 232 global indicators,” Zhaparov said.
He continued that in June of this year, during the visit of the UN First Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed to Kyrgyzstan, the United Nations Framework Program for Cooperation in the field of sustainable development in the Kyrgyz Republic for 2023-2027 was signed, which is designed to assist our country's efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.
According to the voluntary national review on the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals, conducted in 2020, Kyrgyzstan has reached 50% of all indicators set by the UN.
Akylbek Zhaparov emphasized that when defining national priorities in achieving the Goals, Kyrgyzstan pays special attention to the negative impact of climate change on the unique mountain nature. Last year, at the General Debate of the UN General Assembly, the 15th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Convention on Biodiversity in Kunming and the climate summit in Glasgow, the Kyrgyz Republic informed the world community about the detrimental effects of climate change on mountain glaciers and biodiversity.
The Kyrgyz Cabinet chairman called on international partners to support the efforts of the republic and the mountainous countries to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.
