Kyrgyzstan plans to increase area of forests by mass planting of trees

Bishkek, Feb. 4, 2022 . / Kabar / . In pursuance of the Presidential Decree "On Declaring 2022 the Year of Mountain Ecosystems Protection and Climate Sustainability", the relevant Action Plan of the Cabinet of Ministers of Kyrgyzstan is being developed.

Earlier, Kyrgyz President Sadyr Zhaparov, speaking at the UN General Assembly in New York, put forward an initiative to declare 2022 the International Year of Sustainable Mountain Development.

On Dec. 16, 2021, the UN General Assembly unanimously supported this initiative by adopting a resolution on declaring 2022 the International Year of Sustainable Mountain Development.

Azamat Temirkulov, the head of the Department of Reform Monitoring and Analysis of the Kyrgyz President’s Office said that the climate on Earth is changing, which is recognized by the United Nations as one of the main challenges of the present time.

"As part of our country's commitments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere, it is planned to increase the area of forests through mass planting of trees, since green spaces influence the reduction of environmental temperature, accumulate moisture in the soil, produce oxygen and humidify the air. The whole world understands the importance of mountain countries. Other nations must help them, if not stop, but slow the melting of glaciers. Otherwise, river levels will decrease, which in turn will lead to social, economic and security risks around the world," he said.
