Cholpon-Ata, July 21, 2022. /Kabar/. Kyrgyzstan proposes that countries of Central Asia jointly develop mutually beneficial mechanisms for water use, President Sadyr Zhaparov said during the Consultative Meeting of Heads of States of Central Asia in Cholpon-Ata.
He noted that current mechanisms of water resources management do not meet the realities of the present time and do not meet the needs of the Central Asian countries.
"In particular, Kyrgyzstan does not yet receive adequate compensation from accumulation and conservation of water resources. Once again I propose to jointly develop mutually beneficial water use mechanisms, so that the upstream countries have an opportunity and interest to accumulate water resources for irrigation needs in the growing season regardless of water availability, including during low-water periods,” Zhaparov noted.
The president of Kyrgyzstan stressed that the Kyrgyz side supports the resumption and improvement of cooperation within the Agreement on the Use of Water and Energy Resources of the Naryn-Syrdarya River between Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan from 1998, which provides for a balanced exchange of water and energy resources.
"Kyrgyzstan also advocates expanded cooperation in the hydropower sector to increase energy self-sufficiency and security of Central Asian countries. We welcome the investment participation of Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan in hydropower projects in Kyrgyzstan. The accident that occurred in the spring of this year showed vulnerability, and therefore it is necessary to strengthen the security of the Unified Energy System of Central Asia," Sadyr Zhaparov said.
