During a press conference at Kabar News Agency, Director of the Department of Population Registration and Civil Status Acts under the State Registration Service of Kyrgyzstan (SRS) Mukhabat Pratova told about the social assistance provided to Batken residents affected by the border conflict with Tajikistan.
According to her, after the situation on the border was stabilized, a field trip was carried out. The staff of Batken Population Service Center organized mobile groups that visited all the affected villages, where houses were burned and documents were lost.
"We received about 300 applications for restoration of documents. More than 200 of them have already been restored. Most of them were passports, driving licenses, technical passports, birth and marriage certificates. Work on social assistance to victims at the border continues," Pratova said.
An armed conflict on the Kyrgyz-Tajik state border occurred on April 28 after citizens of Tajikistan began installing video surveillance cameras at the water intake in the village of Kok-Tash in Batken Oblast of Kyrgyzstan. As a result of the verbal altercation, the residents of the two countries began throwing stones at each other. On April 29 the situation escalated, the Tajik side opened fire. The armed forces of the Kyrgyz border service retaliated.
The situation stabilized only on May 1 after negotiations between heads of the State Committees for National Security of Kyrgyzstan Kamchybek Tashiev and Tajikistan Saimumin Yatimov. The parties agreed on a complete cease-fire and the withdrawal of non-border guard forces to their locations.
As a result of the armed attack, 36 Kyrgyz citizens were killed, including three servicemen, and the rest were civilians, including two young children.
The Prosecutor General’s Office of Kyrgyzstan considered the actions of the Tajik side as military aggression.
