Kyrgyzstan, Russia amend agreement on status and conditions of stay of air base in Kant

Bishkek, Mar. 28, 2019. /Kabar/. The General Staff of the Kyrgyz Republic and the Ministry of Defence of the Russian Federation signed a protocol to the Agreement of 2012 on the status and conditions of the United Russian military base in the territory of the Kyrgyz Republic.

The document was concluded following the talks of the sides within the state visit of Russian President Vladimir Putin to Kyrgyzstan. The Russian leader arrived in Bishkek today, March 28, in the early morning.

According to Chief of the General Staff of the Kyrgyz Republic Raiymberdi Duishembiev, the new protocol provides for new conditions for cooperation between the two states in the military and military-technical areas.

“This protocol provides for training of Kyrgyz military personnel in the use and joint use of unmanned aircrafts to ensure the defense capability of Kyrgyzstan and the United Military Base. It also includes modernization of the runway at the airport in the city of Kant, which is also used by Kyrgyz aircrafts,” he informed.

In addition, according to him, the protocol provides for an increase in the rent for the use of land and a portion of the water area by Russia for the military base to $ 4 million 790 thousand a year.

“The signing of this document confirms the readiness of the sides to further strengthen military and military-technical cooperation,” the head of the General Staff said.

He noted that the Russian side provides military-technical assistance to Kyrgyzstan on an ongoing basis in the form of armaments, military equipment, and over 500 military personnel of the Kyrgyz Republic study free of charge in higher educational institutions of the Ministry of Defence of Russia.
