Bishkek, Aug. 1, 2023. /Kabar/. The reclamation of the Tuyuk-Suu tailing dump has begun today in the village of Min-Kush of Naryn Oblast, the press service of the Kyrgyz president said.
There are four tailings in Min-Kush: Taldy-Bulak, Tuyuk-Suu, Kak and Far.
The Interstate Target Program "Reclamation of the territories of the EurAsEC member states affected by uranium mining industries" has been implemented since 2013 to solve the problems associated with uranium tailings in the territories of the CIS member states.
The participants of this program are the Kyrgyz Republic, the Republic of Kazakhstan, the Russian Federation and the Republic of Tajikistan. In the neighboring participating countries, the obligations under this program are being successfully fulfilled.
Within the framework of this Program, the Russian state corporation Rosatom, together with the Ministry of Emergency Situations of the Kyrgyz Republic, is working on the reclamation of tailings.
The uranium tailings in the village of Min-Kush, according to the information of specialists, are currently causing the greatest concern, since a landslide is located just below. If it descends, it will block the narrow valley of the Tuyuk-Suu River, which in turn flows into the Min-Kush, Kokomeren and Naryn rivers. The destruction of the tailing dump with radioactive substances may occur. An emergency and extremely unfavorable natural situation has developed at this facility, associated with the possible flooding of the tailing dump during a landslide (Tuyuk-Suu).
Earlier on July 13 this year. President Sadyr Zhaparov met with the local population of the village of Min-Kush, listened to their concerns about the neutralization and disposal of radioactive waste, safety during transportation.
The overwhelming majority of the inhabitants of the village of Min-Kush spoke with approval about the start of reclamation work at these sites.
In this regard, today, on August 1, the work began on the transfer of waste from the tailing dump "Tuyuk-Suu" to "Dalnyi".
Sadyr Zhaparov monitored the start of reclamation work in the Min-Kush village via video link. In particular, he followed the process and rules for organizing freight transportation by road.
The evacuation of the tailings was carried out taking into account the interests and opinions of local residents to ensure their radiation safety.
