Bishkek, Aug. 16, 2021 . / Kabar / . Kyrgyzstan will be able to accept about 1,200 refugees from Afghanistan, ethnic Kyrgyz, if they approach our borders, head of the Department for Work with Refugees of the Ministry of Health and Social Development Zhypara Mambetova told Kabar News Agency.

The country will be obliged to accept refugees because it has been a member of the United Nations Convention on Refugees since 1996.

"We do not predict a mass influx of refugees, since it will affect such countries as Pakistan, Iran, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. 73 Afghan nationals are refugees in Kyrgyzstan now, and another 67 have applied and are awaiting a decision," the specialist added.

Mambetova noted that instead of staying in the country, refugees go to third countries.

"The state cannot provide refugees with housing, they will have to settle down on their own, assistance is provided to them through the UN. After foreigners file an application, the issue of refugee status is resolved from 6 months to a year," she said.

Zhypara Mambetova noted that the lack of a passport or other identity documents is not a reason to deny status because a person may be a victim of circumstances and there is a threat to security.
