Bishkek, April 19, 2021 . / Kabar / . A catch-up immunization campaign with inactivated polio vaccine (IPV) will take place in Kyrgyzstan on April 19 - May 19, 2021, the Health Ministry of the republic said Monday.
Children born between April 1, 2016, and February 15, 2018, will receive the vaccine once, in a dose of 0.5 ml.
Immunization will be free as the vaccine arrives in the country.
The goal of this campaign is to cover 95% of the missed cohort of children.
The republic has received 177,736 doses of IPV and expects to receive the remainder of the vaccine in the near future.
More than 270 thousand 39 children are planned to be vaccinated.
The IPV vaccine was introduced in the Kyrgyz Republic in May 2018 (one dose at 3.5 months of age).
Polio is a dangerous and potentially fatal infectious disease. It is considered a serious disease with lifelong consequences. There is no cure, and the polio vaccine is the only safe and effective way to protect children.
Transmission of wild poliovirus continues in Pakistan, Afghanistan, as well as a number of countries where circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus is registered. There is a risk of cross-border spread of both of wild and vaccine-derived polioviruses.
Recent events in Tajikistan on the registration of 6 cases of type 2 vaccine-derived poliovirus have been classified by WHO as an outbreak and assessed as a Level 2 Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC).
