Kyrgyzstan to toughen penalties for evading maintenance of elderly parents

Bishkek, Oct. 17, 2024. /Kabar/. At a meeting of the Jogorku Kenesh on Oct. 17, Kyrgyz MPs considered and adopted the bill “On Amendments to Certain Legislative Acts of the Kyrgyz Republic (Criminal Code, Civil Code, Family Code)” in the third reading.

The initiators of the bill are deputies Tazabek Ikramov, Nilufar Alimzhanova, Chyngyz Azhibaev, Dinara Ashimova, Aida Isatbek kyzy, Sharapatkan Mazhitova, Aibek Matkerimov, Alisher Erbaev, Aisuluu Mamashova.

Thus, the draft law is designed to increase the penalties for non-fulfillment or incomplete fulfillment of alimony obligations by parents, as well as non-fulfillment or incomplete fulfillment by able-bodied adult children for the maintenance of their incapacitated and in need of financial assistance parents on the basis of a court act or alimony agreement for the maintenance of the child or adult children, but incapacitated and in need of financial assistance.

In addition, the Kyrgyz Parliament adopted the draft law “On amendments to the Criminal Procedure Code of the Kyrgyz Republic” in the second and third readings. The bill is designed to effectively combat crime, to ensure the protection of the rights and freedoms of citizens, and to optimize the work of investigative units of law enforcement agencies.
