Bishkek, Oct. 26, 2021 / Kabar /. To strengthen the cooperation in prison reform sector, Mr. Torben Adams, International Programme Coordinator, UNODC HQ Office in Vienna paid an official visit to Kyrgyzstan from 18 to 26 October 2021 for meetings with the Minister of Justice, Chairperson of the State Prison Service and the Director of the Probation Department.
During his stay, Mr. Adams took part at the high-level UNODC-supported international forum on post release supervision and support to Foreign Terrorist Fighters returnees and other extremist offenders in Kyrgyzstan together with Director of Probation Department under the Ministry of Justice of Kyrgyz Republic with international experts from UN, Kazakhstan, the United States, and Indonesia among others; training on effective and human rights-compliant investigative interview, including with regards to special categories of prisoners, such as women and children; delivered a speech at the foreign terrorist fighters detention programme steering committee meeting; and, signed an Action Plan for the new programme on post release supervision of offender.
UNODC has actively supported the Government of Kyrgyzstan to strengthen the management of violent extremist prisoners and detention of returning foreign terrorist fighters through the 2019-2021 US-funded “Returning Foreign Terrorist Fighters Detention Program.” The support covers a multitude of initiatives, which include prison-based rehabilitation and reintegration programmes.
