Tashkent, Dec. 8, 2021 / Kabar /. The delegation of Kyrgyzstan, headed by Minister of Foreign Affairs Ruslan Kazakbaev, is taking part in the second ministerial conference "Italy - Central Asia", the press service of the Kyrgyz diplomatic mission in Tashkent told Kabar.
During the event, the heads of the foreign affairs agencies of the countries of Central Asia, Italy and representatives of the European Union discussed current challenges in the region, opportunities for cooperation in the spheres of politics, economy and health.
Kazakbaev at the plenary session "Current challenges and new opportunities in Central Asia, national priorities" drew attention to a number of problems in Kyrgyzstan in this area. In particular, he highlighted the worrying uranium tailings, the significant reduction in the total glacier area, and the environmental imbalance by foreign mining companies.
He said that glaciers are a national treasure of Kyrgyzstan. “The intense melting of glaciers, which are natural reservoirs and a zone of fresh water formation not only in Central Asia, but throughout the world is of particular concern. A significant reduction in the total area of glaciers in Kyrgyzstan will inevitably lead to low water levels and will have social, economic and environmental consequences for the entire region,” the minister said.
In this regard, Kazakbaev urged to take appropriate measures to mitigate the effects of climate change, requiring the consolidation of efforts of all states of Central Asia.
